Syracuse Man Charged in Fatal Shooting Linked to E-Bike Attack

Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse man has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting that took place last week on the city’s West Side.David Herndon, 33, was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Jakari Townsend, according to the Syracuse Police Department.

A second victim, a 25-year-old man, was also injured in the shooting but is expected to survive.The incident occurred around 8:04 p.m. last Tuesday near J & B Grocery at 409 Bellevue Ave. Police say two suspects riding VEO motorized e-bikes fired at least 11 shots from 9mm handguns, striking Townsend multiple times.

According to court documents, Herndon is accused of driving a car and leading the shooters to the location where Townsend was attacked.Townsend was found outside the grocery store and later died at Upstate University Hospital.

The second victim sustained gunshot wounds to his torso and shoulder.Investigators say they identified Herndon as a suspect by tracing his movements through a parole GPS bracelet and surveillance cameras in the area.Herndon was taken into custody Monday at around 10:45 a.m. on the 500 block of Gifford Street. He is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
